sketching childhood: Aoife’s camera

children's camera drawing

We asked her what she wanted to do with her Christmas and birthday money. She quickly asked for a new camera to replace the point-and-shoot I accidentally smashed on the kitchen floor a few months back. She had used it since she was three and was pretty confident with it (you can see some of her early photos here).

The irony is not lost on me that I am the one who dropped it, after telling her a million times to be careful with it.

She liked the look of this one online, so we got it,thinking one aimed at children may be better for her. In hindsight we would have been much better off getting a normal point-and-shoot. This feels like a step backwards. Unless you’re outside in perfect weather and stand absolutely still, the pictures are blurry and noisy. But she likes it and snaps away like a pro.

The drawing of the camera was made using graphite pencils, eraser, and my trusted blending stumps. It was a bit trickier to draw than I thought it would be since it was full of little nooks and crannies, but I am glad I did it. Good practice!

  1. I like it! I’m sure she’s enjoying her new camera. And now she knows – even Moms drop things sometimes. 🙂

  2. Oops. 🙂

This story is a reminder to me about loving the process… the act of creating. It seems Aoife comes alive when she looks at the world through the camera lens.

  3. I love this “Sketching Childhood” project, Carin! What a unique and beautiful way to capture stories and memories for your family. I’ve always wanted to learn to draw, and this would be a great reason to try! Although I might be better off behind a camera lens than with a drawing pencil in hand…

  4. Love your sketch Carin… a beautiful camera…. and how wonderful that Aoife loves snapping photos…. she is such a creative little girl…

    • Thanks for coming over Katie! I love cameras and taking photos too, and am slowly learning my dslr. I hope to get my photos to your quality over time. x
