Art, Heart & Healing: week 2, part 2- whimsies

"whimsy family" by Artfully Carin

Man, I continue to be completely bowled over by the amazing quality of the lessons of Tam’s free e-course Art, Heart & Healing. It’s just fantastic! For the second part of week 2 she taught us the basics of whimsies in an effort to turn around/ bring healing to a bad memory from the past. This went in the altered board book with the wishes for our toddler self.

I loved having a go at the whimsies, though I think I completely messed up the male one. Male whimsies are soo hard! I had a blast doing them though. I would have liked to have spent more time on the background, I had this whole thing planned out for it, but time kind of ran away with me this weekend and I am trying to get so many things done before my very special deadline, that I just had to declare it done and leave it.

In week 3 we’re (among other things) creating an empathy monster puppet- that should be fun!

  1. Hi Carin, I love your whimsies! You’ve created such a sweet image, and the background is super (great colours). I like the simplicity and strength of the words on the right hand side.
Lookinf forward to your empathy monster puppet!

  2. Your whimsies are adorable! I think the guy looks great. I don’t think I’ve ever drawn too many male pictures. Good for you for doing it.

  3. Oh Carin I love these pages. Your whimseys are so cute. I am still running behind with this course but will get there. You have inspired me to get into it
    Lee:)

  4. i am loving your journal/story book pages – fantastic idea! i am thinking about devoting a new Moleskine book to pages devoted to my daughter – things I want to say/have her known. Not sure yet, but your work is definitely inspiring me 🙂
i am curious about the transfer technique – i haven’t had much luck, but then i don’t have a laser printer which is what i gather you need (or color copies from professional copy machine.) I just learned about printing on tissue paper (did you tape yours to another sheet of regular paper to keep it from scrunching up? that helps) and also had luck printing on tracing paper (taped to a regular piece of paper) which is less transparent, but smears less.
And yes, a little dose of ABBA everyday keeps the blue meanies away! Thank you Sweden!

  5. That is such a sweet idea to make a book/ journal for cowgirl. Knowing she’s as into art as you are, she’d definitely love that. You’re giving me ideas now (as if I need more!)
Yeah, I taped the tissue paper to a piece of paper. I have a new printer/copier/scanner combo which feeds the paper from the top, which means it stands up rather than lies flat and that it has a tendency to flop a bit. I think that’s the problem.

  6. Thanks Jo! Blue and green- my fave colour combo. Can’t go far wrong with that!

  7. Thanks Janet! Yeah, I don’t know what it is about males. They’re just hard to draw. Full stop. Just takes a bit of practice I gues.

  8. Thanks Lee! I’m sure you’ll love it once you get started.

  9. wow, you’re getting so much out of these classes. wonderful. and the guy looks great.
