Mixed media: A Joyful Heart

Artfully Carin- A Joyful Heart mixed media on canvas

I bought some canvases on sale the other weekend. I had never worked on canvas before and was slightly intimidated by it, so chose one of the smaller pieces (5 x 7″/ 12.7 x 17.7cm) to experiment on. I had lots of fun though and this is the result- A Joyful Heart.

It looks a lot messier in the picture than it does in real life (probably because you see it a lot closer here than you would in real life).

The background is various layers of acrylics. By then I had had the idea of a joyful heart, so printed out a copy of one of my favourite hymns, Then Sings My Soul, painted it red and cut out a heart (making sure the line “what joy shall fill my heart” was visible within the perimeter of the heart), glued it on, smudged the edges with a few different paints, added the word “JOY”, some red dots and outlined some areas with chalk pastels. Hey presto!

And I’m very happy to say I’m not intimidated by canvas anymore. In fact, I can’t wait to get started on my next piece.
